HUMAN DISEASES REDEFINED: Excessive Calcium in Body (Hypercalcaemia)

© 2008/2010:Dr. V.M.Palaniappan

53. Hypercalcaemia (Excessive Calcium)( ©: 27.2.2010: Dr.V.M.Palaniappan, Ph.D.)

When excessive amounts of calcium is found in the blood, it is called hypercalcaemia.

Under normal circumstances, any calcium excesses that had entered into the body through foods and drinks would get out of the body through urine, faeces, sweat, menses fluids, and the like.
If a person is going to drink less water, he would not sweat much, and at the same time, he would not void much urine either.

As a result of under-urination, the calcium excesses tend to accumulate in the soft tissues all over the body, making the cells swollen (hypertrophy).

In a person who habitually under-urinates, some amount of excessive calcium is bound to be constantly present in the blood, giving rise to this condition called hypercalcaemia.

When a person eats too much of protein diet, the sulphur containing amino acids dissolve and free some amount of calcium from the bones.

In an under-urinating person, this free calcium could also be found in the blood, raising it to above the normal range.

One good thing about this condition perhaps is the protection this excess calcium could offer against any ‘virus infection’, for calcium is the substance that offers ‘immunity’ to a person.

52. Hyperactive

The truly obese people always under-urinate (e.g., 2-4 times daily), and that favours the accumulation of calcium, along with several other substances in their body.

This tends to make the person lazy, lethargic and slow-moving. Their reflex too slows down. In other words, they become hypoactive.

As opposed to the above, those adults who drink abundant water (e.g., about 4 L/day) and void nearly all of it through more than, say, 14 urinations daily, become Skeletal people. Their body would develop hyperacidity.

When a person happens to be in a state of hyperacidity for a prolonged period, he/she becomes very thin. This is precisely why practically all the children who are hyperactive stay very thin all the time.

The rate of heartbeat will be rapid (palpitation) among hyperactive children. That would make them highly tensed and stressed, besides being short-tempered.

Here, most of the required nutrients get leached out of the body. As a result, even the red blood cell count can get reduced, making the transportation of oxygen to the brain difficult.

To rectify this problem, the brain makes the body shiver– similar to exercising, and that increases the speed of blood circulation, thus enhancing increased uptake of oxygen.

The sickness would become worse if the person happens to be eating very poor diet, such as plain rice all the time.

Even 1L of water intake and related liberal urination should be considered too much for children aged 3 or 4.

In this category, most of the calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium (cooking salt), etc. that are required for the body’s well-being, get leached out in the urine, creating a shortage of such necessities.

This, especially the shortages of salt (sodium chloride) and calcium, in turn, induces the adrenal glands situated above the kidneys, in the Skeletal people, to secrete more of the male sex hormone androgen (among both genders).

The increase in androgen production promotes a rapid heart beat, and that induces the person to be hyperactive, besides giving him/her nervousness, fear, nightmares, short-temperament, tension, stress, etc.

Children, born to mothers who have been drinking water and urinating excessively while being pregnant, also tend to drink plenty of water and urinate likewise, and end up being hyperactive. Often this over-active behaviour appears to be conspicuous in children more than in adults.

Another very important factor that makes the thin people hyperactive is the increased production of thyroxin hormone by the thyroid gland. This happens because of the increased consumption of iodised salt. Iodine in excess will make a person hyperactive.

A reversal of the lifestyle should help improve the behavioural pattern of these hyperactive persons. That will require practising all the so-called ‘undesirable habits’ of the obese people, until the correction is achieved (see Palaniappan, 1998).

In addition, only uniodised salt should be used in all the foods consumed by these people. Iodine-rich cabbage, sea foods, agar-agar jelly, etc. should also be avoided.

The correction procedure would require administration of restricted quantity of water intake (2 L for adults, and relatively less or little for children), and eating nutrient-rich vegetables and fruits (i.e., inclusion of foods and vegetables that are naturally rich in calcium).

Water reduction programme should be gradual. Any drastic decrease would disturb the person’s health in a different way.

51. Hot flushes (Profuse sweating during menopause)

Hot flushes (or, flashes) refers to profuse sweating in women who are developing menopause, and it tends to continue existing for anything between one to five years.

I have traced the cause for this problem. Once a woman stops her regular menses, calcium, that is usually lost in the menstrual fluid, starts accumulating in the soft tissues of her body (e.g., on face, in breasts, waist, thighs, buttocks, etc).

The blood vessel walls too get hardened because of this calcium accumulation. As a result, the blood ‘tubes’ become narrow, and the blood pressure increases because of this.

Most of the obese women (Obesity Types I – IV) do not release their urinal pressure then and there. They always under-urinate, unlike the Skeletal, Normal and the Perfect women.

As a result, the urine gets absorbed into the blood vessels, so that the liquid waste can be excreted through the sweat pores as sweat.

However, the absorption of urine further increases the liquid volume inside the vessels, and the blood pressure increases a lot more than before.

By right, the very high pressure build-up should rupture the blood capillaries in the brain region, causing bleeding there (cerebral haemorrhage). Such a damage can give rise to strokes.

In order to protect the person from such mishaps, the brain comes to the rescue by creating hot flushes, by means of which the internal liquid pressure will be eased, thus saving the person from stroke and possible death.

The hot flush is almost similar to hyperhidrosis. In other words, when hyperhidrosis occurs in a menopausing woman, it is called hot flush.

Whenever there is evaporation of water, the surface becomes cold. This is why chillness occurs after every hot flush in this kind of women.

Hot flushes are said to occur in about 75% of the women. The remaining 25% of the women do not get this because, they do not withhold their urinal pressure.

The latter 25% women urinate 8 times or more daily. Those who urinate 8-10 times remain in Perfect category, while those urinating 11-13 times remain Thin, and those who do 14 times or more become Skeletal type.

The cure for preventing totally the occurrence of hot flushes in menopausing women is to encourage them to urinate once every two hours for two weeks, then, once every hour for another two weeks. By this time, their hot flush would have totally disappeared.

From then on, they can urinate about 8 times a day, all the time.

50. Hirsutism (Hair Growth in Unwanted Places)

Male sex hormone called androgen secretes in both men and women in differing amounts.
If excessive androgen secretes, the hair from head tends to drop off, while hair tends to grow in other unwanted parts of the body. This is called hirsutism.
Women often develop mild ‘moustaches’, hair on their arms and legs, and even on chest, at times.
I have clinically observed that teenaged girls consuming synthetic chemicals in the form of either medications, food supplements, or vitamins and minerals, almost certainly develop hirsutism.
The approach appears to be to prevent or subside the problem, rather than trying to rectify it, for a cure does not seem to exist.

49. Headaches

I have discussed the causes and cure for this problem extensively in my book on Hair Problems, published in 2005.
Any one or more of the following could give headache to a person:

• Foul air due to poor ventilation
• Poisonous gases: fumes from furnaces, mosquito coils, burning of rubbish, etc.

• Several drugs, alcohol, tobacco, wine, histamines, etc.

• Absorption of toxins produced by bacteria that has infected nose,
teeth, sinus, middle ear, pharynx, tonsils, etc.

• Different kinds of fevers

• Inflammation of kidneys due to the retention of nitrogenous substances in the blood, called nephritis

• Bile duct disease with some liver problems

• Rheumatism

• Diabetes

• Anaemia

• Indigestion, called Dyspepsia

• Gastric hyperacidity

• Gastric hypoacidity

• Stagnation of foods in the intestine, called Intestinal Stasis

• Constipation

• Eye problems, including over-strain

• Over-exposure to sunshine, and

• A few more causes not stated here

Correct diagnosis of the cause that is responsible for a constant headache in a person should be done initially.

Upon this, a correction of the error should give a permanent cure to the person concerned.
Normally, the Breathing Exercise taught to the Group Therapy patients works wonders by totally eradicating headaches.

I have described this method to some extent in my book on obesity (Palaniappan, 1998).

47. Hair Problems

My book entitled “Hair Problems: Causes, Cure and Prevention” (288 pages, published in 2005), has elaborate information on practically all aspects of hair problems.

A summary of the information would only be inadequate to reveal the full reality. Yet, for the benefit of the reader of this book, I am giving below an abstract of the details:

Hair dropping and premature greying are essentially due to (a) erroneous lifestyles of people, and (b) after-effect of diseases. The details on these two can be read in the above book.

Split hair, hair breakage, oily hair, dry hair, dandruff, scalp itch, frontal balding, balding along the parting, central balding, patchy balding, dormant hair, hirsutism, etc. can be prevented/cured by practising the following:

Hair care methods, within a nutshell:

· Massage scalp, the right way, for 15 seconds daily.

· Practise the eating habit of Perfect category people.

· Eat low-density foods.

· Eat more well-washed green leafy vegetables.

· Eat clean food, devoid of poisons.

· Eat acid and alkaline fruits daily.

· Do not take synthetic vitamin and mineral tablets.

· Avoid taking strong medications unnecessarily.

· Take more uniodised natural sea salt.

· Drink adequate purified water daily (about 2L).

· Urinate well, to keep the ‘Input/Output Ratio’ at 1.0.

· Do not consume powdered or very thick milk.

· Do not take chocolate drinks, especially with vitamin-D.
· Avoid smoking, alcoholic drinks, and tea.

· Cleanse intestine with a herbal laxative regularly.

· Do not use fan at high speed, especially while asleep.

· Do not do any sweat producing exercise.

· Avoid exposing your body to strong sunshine

· Do not use any of the mosquito poisons.

· Breathe good air, and keep bedroom windows open.

· Sleep well for 8 hours nightly, using a clean pillow.

· Do not rub hair oil on scalp.

· Do not use low-quality shampoos.

· Avoid over-rubbing even good quality shampoos.

· Use good water for hair wash.

· Wash hair often, using conditioner oil and shampoo.

· Never let a forceful jet of shower water hit your scalp.

· Comb hair once daily, holding a clean comb vertically.

HUMAN DISEASES REDEFINED

46. Gout (Swelling in Knees and Ankles)

The muscles all around the knee or ankles swell up, giving pain to the person.

This is said to be an acute form of arthritis. If pressed, it would feel spongy as if the tissues are filled with water.

When the body fluid turns acidic (hyperacidosis), arthritis and gout develop. The cure for these two is to nullify the acidity, and turn the body’s reaction to a mildly alkaline state.

Lime juice, added with sugar to change the sour taste, and orange juice taken on empty stomach, twice daily for four or five days should correct the problem.

Other alkaline foods such as sea-coconut (the fruits of Borassus flabellifers), coconut water, unfermented freshly collected toddy (called ‘pathaneer’ in Tamil) etc. are other good sources for curing this problem.

Long-term chronic sufferers may need to take lime juice for more than a week. The details are given under arthritis.

The knee pain and associated swelling can occur in both the obese as well as the Skeletal or Thin people.

To prevent these problems, one should avoid overly acidifying the body at a rapid speed. A slow change over from alkalinity to acidity does not give rise this problem.

45. Grey Hair / White Hair

I have written in elaborate detail a book on hair problems (Palaniappan, 2005). The causes for greying, cure for the problem, and the method for the prevention of greying, etc. are well described in it.

Hair becomes grey in people under the age of about 40 because of iron inadequacy or its depletion.

The black pigment-producing cell called melanocyte present at the base of the hair stops its productivity when people become older, and that too makes the hair grey.

Eating food that does not contain enough iron, the unavailability of the iron present in some of the vegetable matter, or the loss of iron due to its removal by alkaline substances can result in iron inadequacy leading to premature greying.

In the obese people, and also in the asthmatics, there is abundant calcium accumulation because of under-urination.

Additionally, these people tend to eat calcium-enriched food items, or even take calcium tablets, believing that it is good for them.
Calcium being an alkaline substance, makes all heavy metals, including iron, unavailable to the body for use.

This is the reason why the asthmatics and the obese develop premature grey hair.

The cure rests upon the efficient removal of the hurdles that prevent iron availability.

Therefore, a drastic reduction of the excessive calcium from the body would set right the premature greying in the asthmatics and the obese.

As described earlier, one should drink more water, urinate nearly all of it, eat slightly more of the acid-natured vegetable matter such as garlic, mangos, and the like that taste sour to the tongue.

The grey can most probably be seen turning blackish in about four months. However, one should remember not to overdo when it comes to the consumption of acid foods, for the rule is ‘anything in excess will become dangerous’.

HUMAN DISEASES REDEFINED

44. Goitre (Swelling of Thyroid Gland)

Hashimoto’s type of hypothyroidism develops in some of the obese people (Obesity Types III and IV, with calf hardness of anything between 61% and 100%) who suffer from the inadequacy of iodine caused by the near-total avoidance of consuming salt, fish, cabbage, etc.

In iodine insufficiency, the thyroid gland swells up, and such a swelling is called goitre.

Even if the obese were to consume reduced quantities of the iodised salt, without increasing water intake and urina-tion, they would not suffer from hypothyroidism any more.
However, if such obese people took plenty of salt, irrespective of its iodine status, they would develop hyper-tension, for the salt excesses would only stay within the body (in the blood) because of their under-urination habit.

The non-overweight people, otherwise categorised as the Skeletal and the Thin, normally do not develop hypothy-roidism or goitre, for they always take plenty of salt, and thereby their iodine requirement would get satisfied.

However, if the Skeletal, Thin and Perfect people consume the iodine-enriched salt, the iodine would become excessive in their body. As a result of such an excess, their thyroid gland would secrete excessive thyroxin hormone, giving them hyperthyroidism, which would make them hyperactive.

As a result, the Skeletal people can never put on any weight. Instead, the more food (thereby more salt) they eat, the more will be the hyperactive state of such people.

Any attempt to correct the hyperactivity of the Skeletal people should centre around the elimination of iodine from their body, coupled with the consumption of iodine-free salt.

In addition, the hyperactive people should not consume at all any of the iodine-rich foods such as cabbage, agar-agar jelly, and the ‘sea-foods’ (e.g., sea fish, prawns, etc.).
If the hyperactive Skeletal, Thin or Perfect category people consume far too much of the iodine-enriched salts through their foods and drinks, then, the hypothalamus gland located at the brain would produce a substance called the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH).

The TSH would induce the Thyroid gland to secrete far too much of the Thyroxin hormone.

Such an abundant Thyroxin will increase hyperactivity in the person to an unusual extreme - beyond his body’s tolerance limit.

At this, the brain, in order to save him from collapsing, induces the hypothalamus gland to secrete another sub-stance, viz., thyroid auto-antibodies, and they are called Thyroglobulin antibody and Microsomal antibody.

These antibodies are carried in the blood to the thyroid gland, and they destroy the thyroid gland itself, in a suicidal manner.

As a result, the thyroxin secretion totally stops, leading to the malfunctioning of the body physiology in several ways.

The above action is very much similar to the withdrawal of insulin in the case of type-1 diabetics.

The sufferer is given a daily dose of synthetic Thyroxin hormone, with which he can carry on living almost similar to a normal person. There will be no other choice.

However, minor problems related to slight dosage excess or inadequacy are bound to occur every now and then. Therefore, proper monitoring to decide the right dosage becomes a necessity among this group of people.

Often, all the ill-informed health advocates advise all people to reduce their salt consumption.

The obese people listen to them, and reduce their daily iodised salt consumption. Whereas, those who are thin continue taking plenty of it in their foods.

In some countries, the governments have made it into a law to force the salt manufacturers to enrich all their products with extra iodine.
When the obese people consume reduced quantities of the iodised salt, their health remains alright.

But, when the thin people take plenty of the iodised salt, they initially become innocent victims of iodine over-consumption that makes them into hyperactive people.

As said earlier, at its extreme, they develop hypothy-roidism due to the total dysfunction and death of the thyroid gland.

As per my findings, those who consume more of the natural, uniodised salt (to taste) will remain very healthy.By right, the governments should advocate only the obese people to take less of the iodised salt, while at the same time, make available uniodised natural sea salt for the benefit of the thin people.

43. German Measles

This disease is caused by ‘virus’. If and when the body of a person becomes extremely acidic (hyperacidosis) for a prolonged period, he/she develops this measles. Children appear to be more prone to this.

There does not seem to exist any drug or herbal medicine for curing this problem.

The disease rapidly subsides and recovery gets speeded up when these patients are administered with alkaline foods and fruits e.g., sea coconut, coconut water, its tender meat, ‘pathaneer’, etc). Drinking small quantities of water very mildly alkalised with a tiny bit of calcium hydroxide (= burnt lime/ kapur/ chunnambu that is used for betel chewing) (to pH 7.2 or so) helps substantially*. This neutralises the acidity. Acid foods, fruits and drinks should not be given at all, as these would worsen the situation. Bed-rest is a must.

(* This must be carefully done by an experienced person. Careless application of excessive lime may harm the person. So, great care must be exercised in treating all kinds of virus infected persons, including those with measles)

See Virus Infections, Immunity Against Virus Diseases, and Body Heat/ Heaty Body.
