CRITICAL
EVALUATION OF CERTAIN STUDIES THAT FOUND
CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS MAY REDUCE
THE
INCIDENCE OF COLO-RECTAL CANCERS.

Of late, it has become fashionable for manufacturers
of food and drinks to claim that their products contain ABUNDANT CALCIUM.
Now-a-days, even a child knows that he/she has to take
plenty (?)of calcium if his/her bones, teeth, nails, and the entire body are to
grow well, and remain healthy.
As a result, almost without exception, ALL the drinks (beverages, orange juice),
whether that be for children or for adults, are made rich by the addition of calcium.
Where possible, the food manufacturers too do
likewise (e.g., biscuits, corn flakes, etc.).
They convince us with the so-called scientific
evidences. Daily minimum requirement of calcium is often used as a selling
point.
In this process, both the manufacturers and the
consumers appear to be overlooking TWO important aspects.
(1) Their particular
food item may meet certain percentage of the daily calcium requirement of a
person.
What happens if the
person takes double or triple servings of THAT product?
What would happen
if THAT person consumes several other products that may contain ‘plenty’ of
calcium, but to the level suggested by the Daily Minimum Requirement program?
Will they not add
up to ENORMOUS quantities?
(2) The universal truth
is “Anything in EXCESS will be dangerous!”
* * * * * *
Well, what would happen if a person consumes far too
much of calcium?
Getting too
much calcium can cause constipation. It might also interfere with the body's
ability to absorb iron and zinc.
In adults, too much calcium from dietary supplements might
increase the risk of kidney stones.
Although I am not too sure of the constipation aspect, I fully subscribe to the above statement.
In fact, there are a few more problems as well.
... movement of the calcium ion Ca2+ into and out of the cytoplasm functions as a signal for many cellular
processes. As a major
material used in mineralization of bone, teeth and shells...
MY OWN
FINDINGS (Palaniappan, 1998-2013: 13 books):
1.
In the first place, calcium that goes
into the body through natural food products and drinks, even if they happen to
be rich in it, may not do much harm, provided the person voids adequate urine
on a daily basis.
2.
Calcium supplementations would harm well-urinating
people to a minor extent
3.
Even natural food and drinks would
harm the under-urinating people.
4.
If under-urinating people take
calcium supplements, they would end up with major diseases, such as type-2
diabetes, kidney stones, hypothyroidism, heart blockages, brain tumours,
cancers, and the like.
5. Likewise, if people whose faecal matter is SLIMY all the time (due to the intake of very high fibre or eating over-ripe fruits such as papaya, and the like), and if they take calcium supplements, the situation can become WORSE.
6.
It is true that excessive calcium, being highly alkaline,
suppresses the utilization of iron from food, thus can cause iron-deficiency
anaemia.
7.
Excessive calcium in the body makes a
person dull-headed and lazy, owing to the above-indicated iron shortage. Memory failure becomes a common complaint.
8.
It is true that excessive calcium
within the body results in kidney stones, thickening of blood vessels, and also
the heart blockages.
9.
Excessive calcium with adequate
Vitamin-D (either from sunshine or from enriched consumables) gives rise extra
bone growth, such as SPURS, or even to start off Chondosarcoma (cancer in the
long bone).
10.
Apart from all the above, EXCESSIVE
calcium enters into cells, and ENLARGES THEM, resulting in the enlargement of the entire
organ: e.g., Prostate Gland.
(I have observed this problem in nearly all those
who consume excessive SOUPS: e.g., 14 bowls of any soup, every week.)
(After
all, soups are extracts of all
water-soluble substances from vegetables or meats / bones, particularly
the calcium.)
11. Continued
accumulation of such excessive calcium within the cells makes the cells HEAVIER
as well. Collectively, the body becomes overweight / obese.
12 Such
accumulations in the thyroid gland gives hypothyroidism.
13. Too
much of calcium gives early menopause to women.
14. AGAIN,
TOO MUCH OF THIS WILL GIVE OSTEOPROSIS IN MENOPAUSAL WOMEN. (Calcium deficiency
does NOT give osteoporosis to women, instead, the brain sheds of the excess – I
will discuss this elsewhere, again). (See
Palaniappan, 2012: Menses, Menopause, and Osteoporosis”.)
15. Too
much of calcium increases the SIZE of the sperms, and reduces number of sperms
and sperm motility in the seminal fluid.
16. Far
too much of calcium within the body (in the cells of the soft tissues, of
course) gives rise to lumps / benign structures initially, which, upon further
accumulation, turn into cancers (See Palaniappan, 2010: Cancer: Causes, Cure and Prevention).
17. Excessive
calcium in the lymph ducts give rise to cancer there.
18. Excessive
calcium in the blood gives rise to blood cancer.
19. Excessive
calcium in the intercellular spaces in the brain of those people who sleep
without a pillow (or positioning the head at a lesser level than rest of the
body), gives rise to brain tumour.
20. The
same in the colo-rectal region gives rise to colo-rectal cancer, and so on.
At this, some of you may want to refer to a recent
study that said that increased calcium intake has reduced the chances of
colo-rectal cancer occurrence.
Some studies have reported
that calcium intake may prevent colo-rectal cancer.
The following papers have relevance
to this finding:
1. Weingarten MA, Zalmanovici A, Yaphe J (2005). Dietary calcium
supplementation for preventing colorectal cancer and adenomatous polyps. In Weingarten, Michael Asher. "Dietary calcium supplementation
for preventing colorectal cancer, adenomatous polyps and calcium metabolisism
disorder".Cochrane database of systematic reviews (Online) (3):

After reading the above articles, you may want to counter-argue
with me.
The above end-result should be true!
I do not deny that.
That is, calcium supplementations
could have reduced the incidence of colo-rectal cancer.
Let ME explain how the phenomenon could have
occurred in this case.
I have established earlier (Palaniappan, 2010:
Cancer: Causes, Cure and Prevention) that the glandular cells called
adenomatous cells that make up the lining of the intestinal tract (at the
colo-rectal region, in particular) absorbs ANY FREE CALCIUM AVAILABLE there.
About one-third of the calcium present in the food
(especially the vegetable matter) eaten does not get absorbed, and is thrown
out of the body as part of the faeces. The brain does this kind of management job.
If a person eats food that contains FAR TOO MUCH of
FIBRES (e.g., as in most of the over-ripe fruits, such as mangos), or over-ripe
papaya, and the like, the faces becomes SLIMY and ACIDIFIED by faecal bacteria.
When the faeces turns ACIDIC, hitherto unutilised /
undigested / unabsorbed calcium present in the faeces in a ready state for
defecation at the colo-rectal area (such as Calcium oxalate, for example) becomes FREED from
the bound or locked-up state.
This freely available calcium gets absorbed by the
glandular cells at the lining of the colo/rectal region, and gives rise to
CANCER THERE.
The above being the case, IF A PERSON TAKES CALCIUM
SUPPLEMENTATIONS AT THIS POINT, THAT WILL NEUTRALISE THE ACIDITY CREATED BY THE
FAECAL BACTERIA.
When the ACID faeces turn ALKALINE (because of the
fresh oral intake of calcium), the slimy faeces would get consolidated and turn to be a solid and shapely
structure, thus preventing the release of the locked-up calcium
as a free substance.
Thus, the availability of calcium TO THE ADENOMA
CELLS AT THE COLO-RECTAL REGION WILL GET DRASTICALLY REDUCED, or stopped nearly totally.
As a result of reduced calcium accumulation,
naturally, cancer would NOT occur at the colo-rectal region.
This is how the research study must have yielded a
significant reduction in the rate of colo-rectal cancers.
At this, you may want to ask me another question:
If I said that it is excessive calcium that gives
rise to cancer, how come that the calcium supplementation in these studies have
actually lessened the incidences.
The following answer should justify this questioning:
If calcium is absorbed and retained in the cells
present in the colo-rectal area, then, cancer would develop there.
In the case of calcium supplement intake, that
calcium gets absorbed at a MUCH HIGHER LEVEL IN THE INTESTINAL TRACT (and not
at the colon), enters into the blood stream, (and the excesses may get expelled
into the lymph fluid as regulated by the calcitonin, since the lymph network being the drainage system to contain
all the unwanted substances).
The calcium that had entered into the blood (or
lymph) tends to get distributed to ALL parts of the body.
If Vitamin-D is available at that moment, this
calcium excess would get fixed in the bones, and may even turn into SPURS.
If and when such a bone-fixation occurs, naturally
for want of calcium excess, cancer will not occur at the colo-rectal region.
Even the chances of cancer development in other parts of the body would become much less.
This will form my explanation/ interpretation for the findings reported in the
following paper:
Lappe, JM; Travers-Gustafson, D; Davies, KM; Recker, RR; Heaney, RP
(2007). "Vitamin D and calcium supplementation reduces cancer risk: results of a
randomized trial". The American journal of
clinical nutrition 85 (6): 1586–91. PMID 17556697.
In the absence of Vitamin-D, the calcium from the
blood (or lymph) may end up in ANY of the SOFT tissues in the body (e.g.,
breast, prostate gland, liver, pancreas, or any such organ).
If such excess calcium from the supplements get
distributed evenly into other parts of the body, naturally, COLON or RECTAL
region TOO would receive only a small, relatively insignificant share of the
calcium excess.
Being in such a small quantity, the calcium in the
colo-rectal region may not be enough to form a cancer there.
HENCE, THE ABOVE
STUDIES HAD YIELDED A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN THE COLO-RECTAL CANCER
INCIDENCE.
If the above researchers monitored carefully the exact*
body weight of the samples (the people who were used for the testing), they would
have almost certainly noticed, an OVERALL INCREASE in the body weight of those
people – due to the addition of the calcium excesses in the cells of various
organs in the body.
(* Ref: How to take EXACT body weight: The weighing should be done without clothes, AFTER toileting, after voiding urine, before breakfast, all the time - i.e., daily. Only then, any two readings will become comparable.)
DO YOU KNOW WHY PEOPLE OFTEN DEVELOP CANCERS AT THE
COLO-RECTAL REGION, AND NOT IN THE UPPER PARTS* OF THE SMALLER INTESTINES?
It is because, although calcium gets absorbed in
any part of the small / large intestine, that calcium does NOT
stay accumulated in the cells present at that location.
On absorption,
such calcium is simply passed on to the liver for further distribution and use.
Whereas, it is in the colo-rectal region the faeces
stays (for much longer duration) with unutilised calcium, and that contributes to cancer development when the faeces turns acidic, as described earlier.
(* During daytime, the food keeps on moving in the smaller intestine. However, if a person constantly and habitually eats very late night dinner, say after 10 or 11 p.m., the food would get stagnated in the upper parts of the intestinal tract, owing to the cessation of the peristalsis action.
The peristalsis that resumes the next morning would push the food further.
Such over-night stagnation enhances the absorption of calcium by lining cells in the stomach itself to yield stomach or pancreatic cancer.
This does not seem to occur in early diners)
This would form one additional evidence to prove my
point that it is calcium (from the acidified faecal matter) that gives rise to
colo-rectal cancer, and not any other ‘magic’ substance or anomalous cell.
MY FINAL CONCLUSION IS THAT, IT IS CALCIUM EXCESS
THAT GIVES RISE TO CANCER, NO MATTER WHAT PART OF THE BODY IT DEVELOPS, AND,
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “CANCER CELLS”.
On this, you may want to question me as why and how
the chemotherapy and/or radiations heal some
of the cancers in people.
I will write an appropriate and acceptable answer
to this question in my next posting.
It is so because, I do not want to make this
article too lengthy to read.
I sincerely hope that I have given an excellent
answer to some of the disturbing questions that are faced by the mainstream
medical professionals, particularly the oncologists.
Now, it is up to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and
related research-oriented organisations to evaluate my findings with some
amount of open-mindedness, for the benefit of mankind.
Well, friends, I sincerely thank you for reading
such a hard-going critical analysis of the subject.
With best wishes and thanks.
