HOW GOOD OR BAD ALKALINE FOOD AND WATER CAN BE FOR HUMAN HEALTH?

Someone commented today referring to my article in this Blog that has a heading, “Why some girls develop big breasts at an early age, while others a flat chest?”

However, the comment was related to the consumption of ALKALINE water, rather than the size of the breast, or anything else.

The commentator felt that a machine (manufactured by a particular industry – his own?) that produced alkaline water, and sold as a branded produce, was of very good use for the betterment of human health.

I responded to his questioning, giving all the details in a manner that could convince him that ‘anything in excess can be dangerous’. He seems to have convinced to some extent.

In the meantime, as I was browsing through the “Newsletter. Physiol. Org.” in the Google search, to know the latest research information, I saw the following heading that was from Medical X’press (March 31, 2017):

“How the alkaline diet may actually benefit you”

Sreedhar Mandayam, Associate Professor of Nephrology in Baylor College of Medicine has expressed his opinion that consuming alkaline food would positively help for keeping the body in good health.

The Professor’s statement is true to a certain degree.

However, with due respect to the Professor, I think, he may want to consider the facts I have discussed in this article, and may also want to reconsider his interpretations, if he is convinced of my reporting.

The above two matters aroused my interest.

It occurred to me that I should clear the air for all those who are at the cross-roads.

Let me first sort out the misunderstandings people may have about the ALKALINE water:

All of us know very well that our blood is very mildly ALKALINE, in that it stays at all times, only between pH 7.35 and 7.45*.

(* For the benefit of non-scientists: the acidity/alkalinity scale runs from pH 1 (very strong acid) to pH 14 (very strong alkalinity). The mid-point is pH 7.0, called neutral pH. So, 7.3 or 7.4 is slightly alkaline!)

The following explanation, not known to anyone else is: the reason for our blood to remain at pH 7.35 – 7.45.

The following is my own interpretation:

From time immemorial, humans have been drinking water from the POND, and NOT directly from the rain drops.

Rain water is ACIDIC, with pH5.6.

Why?

Because, water is H2O. (Two parts of Hydrogen + 1 part of Oxygen).

When this pours down from the blackish (called cumuliform) cloud down to the earth, it passes through the AIR.

The air has CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) in it.

So, the carbon dioxide & water combine together, to become H2CO3. This is called CARBONIC ACID.

It is this carbonic acid that makes the water ACID, and its pH is around pH5.6.
Thus, all the rain water tends to remain in an ACID state*.

(*  Extra chemistry: If the rain water (at pH5.6) passes through air that has been polluted by some acid gasses (e.g., hydrogen sulphide = H2S) emitted by some industry, then the pH of the rain water can become stronger acid, such as pH5.0 or 4.5 and so on. We call this ACID RAIN.
Plants need different kinds of ALKALINE minerals, most being CALCIUM, then magnesium, potassium, and so on.
If ACID rain drops, most of the plant nutrients (e.g. the Calcium = Ca) will get destroyed. That would result in the death of the plant.)

The soil has Calcium* and other nutrients that are ALKALINE.
(* Calcium comes from rocks in the earth: e.g., limestone hills that are under the soil, e.g. Batu Caves hill)

When rain drops at pH 5.6 fall over the soil, and roll over to a lower ground – a pit or a POND, the running water ‘picks up’ the CALCIUM and other alkaline substances.

Thus, the water in the POND becomes ALKALINE.

The pH of the pond water will be ALKALINE. The pH will vary according to the amount of the calcium and other alkaline minerals that are present in the soil of THAT location.

However, the pond water, under normal circumstances, tends to be around pH 7.00, 7.5. 8.0, 8.5 and the like.

SINCE HUMANS HAVE BEEN DRINKING ONLY THE POND WATER ALL THE TIME – DURING THE PROCESS OF EVOLUTION, THE HUMAN BODY HAS SETTLED TO HAVE ITS BLOOD TO REMAIN BETWEEN 7.35 & 7.45*.

(* In England, in the city of Liverpool, for instance, because of heavy industrialisation since very long, the air remains very highly polluted all the time, and rain turns highly acidic, making the soil too very acidic. Therefore, the pond water too becomes not drinkable. Therefore, in nearly all the cities in England, they ADD calcium to the PIPED water, to make its pH to be around 7.5 or so, so that it does not ruin human health.)

I have tested the PIPED water in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor State, and found that to be HIGHLY ALKALINE. Often, the pH ranges between 7.5 and 8.5, with further fluctuations!

Do you know what makes Malaysian pond waters alkaline?

It is because of the LIMESTONE hills - under the soil!

The British people, while ruling Malaysia, following their practice in Britain, enriched the piped water in Malaya, adding Calcium to it, thus making it even more alkaline.

The sad part is: even after attaining independence, the Malaysian water managers have been practicing the same procedure.

When I was Professor in University of Malaya (<1993), I was invited by the Ministry to enlighten them on the water pH matters.

The Authorities then promised of stopping the practice. However, I think, the practice is still on.

Since Malaysian water is already ALKALINE at higher pHs, we should NOT make the water more alkaline!

Therefore, the truth remains that ANY WATER TREATING MACHINE THAT TURNS THE WATER MORE ALKALINE SHOULD NOT BE USED in Malaysia.

The next question that stands out is:

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF A PERSON CONTINUES TO DRINK ALKALINE WATER at higher pHs? Higher than, say, pH7.5?

Even before answering the above question, it would be better to know what would happen if one drinks ACID water all the time?

We (adults) need about 500 mg of Calcium daily for maintaining our body in good health. (Children require double, about 900 mg daily).

This calcium comes from water & food we consume.

If we drink ACID water, not only that will does not have calcium in it, but that ACID water will DEPLETE (remove) even the calcium that can be had from vegetables and other eatables. Further, it can also remove calcium from our own BONES!.

These actions will make our skeletal system much weaker, besides making our body ACIDIFIED.

Acidified body = very ‘heaty’ body!

If body becomes acidified – called hyper acidosis, then, VIRUS will definitely infect us. Initially, sore throat, then common cold, followed by fever, + any other virus-caused disease, including chickenpox, measles, etc.

In order to prevent virus infections, we have to keep our body in an alkaline state – MILDLY ALKALINE STATE! That can be, say, pH7.5*.

(* According to the Tamil Nadu’s Siddha Medicine, they recommend to consume three-fifth (60%) alkaline food, and two-fifth (40%) acid food. That makes excellent sense, indeed!)

Now, what happens if our body turns VERY HIGHLY ALKALINE?

1.   Bacteria that love to live in alkaline medium will infect us, and that will give us one or more of the bacteria-caused diseases.

2.   The calcium excesses, if consumed in EXCESS, will get out our body through URINATION, thus leaving our body in a health state, in spite of drinking or eating high pH items. This clearance requires, as per my long-term research, EIGHT TIMES of urination daily. (In other words, we should drink about 2 L of water, and also urinate about 2 L of urine).

3.   The problem would arise only if we UNDER-URINATE!

4.   People living in villages tend to urinate the moment they get the pressure to void urine. So, they tend to remain healthy.

5.   Those living in city areas, working in air-conditioned offices, and those who sweat out PROFUSELY, void VERY LITTLE URINE. Most people tend to urinate only THRICE daily!

6.   As a result of under-urination, even if a person is going to drink water at pH 7.5, his/her body is going to RETAIN within the body MOST of the CALCIUM.

7.   The quantity of calcium saved (accumulated within the body) daily would reach to enormous levels along with time.

8.   When Calcium gathers too much within the body, that gets stored within the SOFT cells (e.g., in the breast, various organs, etc.).

9.   When abundant calcium accumulates, the cells in that organ divide to accommodate the calcium excesses, and that creates bulges.

10.                 If that happens in the breast, we call it BREAST LUMP. It that accumulates in the cells of the Prostate Gland, we call it Prostate ENLARGEMENT, and cancer later. If that gathers in the liver we call it CYST. In the womb, we call it ENDOMETRIOSIS. In the ovary, that can become POLY CYSTIC OVARY. If in the cervix, it can become CERVICAL CANCER, if in the kidneys, we can them kidney stones. In the heart, we call it HEALRT BLOCKAGE. The calcium excesses can also thicken the blood vessel walls, and call that ATHEROSCLEROSIS. When in brain, it will be BRAIN TUMOUR.

These calcium accumulations, at initial stages, would give plenty of WHITE DISCHARGE to women.

One nice thing that happens when abundant calcium accumulates within the body is that, we would NOT get any virus-caused diseases.

That means, all under-urinating people will never get common cold and fever.  However, they will keep on become more and more OBESE!

After knowing all the above, do you still wish to drink ALKALINE water?

Drinking alkaline water will be very good for a week, if your body feels very heaty. In other words, if your body had turned hyper acidosis, and if you drink alkaline water, you will get the cure almost immediately, if not overnight!

Whether it is ALKALINE WATER or ALKALINE FOOD, the end-result is the SAME!

Whatever is the source of EXCESSIVE CALCIUM, all those excesses should get out of our body through URINATIONS!*

(Of course, the undigested, unabsorbed, water-insoluble calcium that had gone into the body through VEGETABLES, will have to be eliminated through proper DEFECATIONS.

Constipations or defecating diarrhoea-like slimy faeces would enhance its entry into the body. So, one must not constipate or defecate slimy faeces, but would let it out as solid and shapely structure on a daily basis.)

The inference we get is, we can eat CALCIUM-RICH FOOD AND DRINKS, but they HAVE TO BE NATURAL, and NOT ENRICHED*!

(* Machine-processed water is EQUIVALENT TO ENRICHED WATER, and therefore, it would be better to avoid consuming it for more than one week at a stretch!)

HOW DOES VITAMIN-D SUPPLEMENT HELP IN THE LOWERING OF HEART DISEASES?

Vitamin D pill a day may improve exercise performance and lower risk of heart disease

Dr Emad Al-Dujaili and Dr Raquel Revuelta Iniesta, researchers from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh have found that a daily supplement of Vitamin-D can, as the heading says, lower the risk of heart disease, and also increase the stamina for work.

I have the following INTERPRETATIONS in addition to the above observations:

We know that Vitamin-D will fix the CALCIUM in the BONE.

What would happen in the ABSENCE of Vitamin-D?

The answer is:

It will be floating (NOT in the blood, for the Calcitonin hormone does NOT allow Calcium EXCESSES to be in the blood stream, as that would adversely change the blood pH to produce detrimental results) in the LYMPH fluid, and then would get into the URINAL BLADDER, via the KIDNEYS, so that that would get VOIDED out along with the URINE.

A problem would arise if THAT Calcium EXCESS does not get thrown out of the body, because of UNDER-URINATION .

If a person does NOT urinate adequately to remove these Calcium EXCESSES (for, more water has to be drunk to void all of the excesses by the urine at the saturation point), only then, such EXCESSES can ACCUMULATE within the body.

Now, again, for want of choice, the unspent Calcium EXCESSES (since NOT fixed in the bone, for want of sunshine or Vitamin-D) would get transported by the LYMPH fluid to the SOFT CELLS present in various organs of the body, including the muscles.

When these Calcium EXCESSES get into the soft cells to become part of the cytoplasm, those cells ENLARGE owing to the dumping, and become HEAVIER, making the ENTIRE person BIG-SIZED and also OVERWEIGHT.

(When such Calcium EXCESSES enter into the SOFT milk-forming duct CELLS present in the BREASTS, for instance, LUMPS form there, with potentials for turning into BREAST CANCERS later, if such Calcium accumulations continue to happen.)

Similar to what happens in the breasts, the Calcium EXCESSES tend to get impregnated into the soft cells present in the blood vessels, thus making the lumen narrower and the walls thicker – giving rise to ARTERIO- or ATHEROSCLEROSIS.
This process would also create BLOCKAGES in the heart, with potentials for MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION (heart attack).

If the FREE Calcium gets FIXED as part of the BONES with the help of Vitamin-D, then, there is no ROOM for the development of ARTERIOSCLEROSIS AND HEART BLOCKAGES.
One more point that has probably been overlooked (that is, missed to monitor / observe) by the Researchers Dr Emad Al-Dujaili and Dr Raquel Revuelta Iniesta, while performing this study is:

The unutilised / unspent free Calcium EXCESSES, in the ABSENCE of Vitamin-D or sunshine, would ALSO give rise to form RENAL CALCULI (kidney stones).

Yet another even that can happen in the absence of Vitamin-D is the development of HYPOTHYROIDISM.
Under such a circumstance, the body would also gain, as said earlier, OVERWEIGHT and OBESITY.

Along with all these, in the case of WOMEN, ENDOMETRIOSIS, POLYCYSTIC OVARY, BLOCKAGES in the FALLOPIAN TUBES, ERRATIC MENSES, IRON DEFICIENCY ANAEMIA, LEUCORRHOEA, etc. (+ panting and short-breadth, indigestion, energylessness, memory failure, etc. at lesser level) WOULD ALSO OCCUR.

You may want to know how does exercise performance improved with the input of Vitamin-D.

Calcium EXCESS, when present inside the body, because of it very high alkaline pH, interferes in the absorption of IRON mineral that comes from the food.

We know iron is a must for the formation of BLOG – the RBC.

When Vitamin-D fixes the free Calcium in the bone, the iron would get absorbed, thus helping the nocturnal reformation of the lost red blood cells, on a daily basis.

A blood that is rich in its RBC composition would naturally have increased potentials for transporting the much needed oxygen that is necessary for the digestion and combustion of the food material for energy release, and that can increase the stamina in people.

Since the above sequence does not happen in the OBESE, those people tend to be lazy, lethargic, and energyless.

IN REALITY,

In the current study by Dr. Emad Al-Dujaili and Dr. Raquel Revuelta Iniesta, if they monitored all those I have indicated above, they could have almost certainly had POSITIVE RESULTS (THROUGH A MULTIPLE CORRELATION ANALYSES OF THE RESULTS).

They would have most probably come up with the following results:

(These are hypotheses for them, at this stage):

Vitamin D pill a day may improve (1) exercise performance, (2) breathing and digestion potentials, (3) lower risk of heart diseases (blockages, arterio- atherosclerosis, hypertension), (4) lower several of the women’s diseases including endometriosis, polycystic ovary, erratic menses, leucorrhoea, etc. (5) lower type-2 diabetes, (6) lower ALL cancers, and (7) lower morbid obesity.

THE FACT SHOULD REMAIN THAT I HAVE ALREADY FOUND ALL THE ABOVE THROUGH MY 40 YEARS OF STUDY, through the practice of ECOLOGICAL HEALING SYSTEM, an evidence-based, scientific alternative medicine.

SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE DOES NOT WEAKEN ARTERIAL HEALTH IN CHILDREN

I just read a research finding that came from the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Eastern Finland.

This news was based on a study project entitled, “Physical activity and nutrition in children”, “PANIC”, for short.

It says that the ARTERIES of INACTIVE OBESE children with HIGHER BODY FAT (aged 6 - 8) become STIFF.

The scientists have also found that the opposite of all the above is also true. This means, the arteries of active children in whom the fat content is less have flexible walls.

Their study sample included 160 children, and the original results were published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports.

(Let me explain all the above a little for the benefit of non-biologists:

Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated ‘good’ blood.

The walls of these vessels should be thin and flexible, so that, (a) when a need to pump more blood (when a person runs, for instance), the vessels can expand and accommodate the rushing blood, and (b) the inner space of the blood tube, called lumen will be ‘big’ as was meant to be.

If the walls become THICK, it would (a) harden the walls and thereby make it stiff, and (b) the lumen space would get reduced. As a result, for want of adequate volume space, blood pressure may increase.

When men in their 40’s and 50’s (and women after menopause) get their fine arteries within the heart (called coronary vessels) loose their flexibility and become stiff (thus narrowing the lumen), the cholesterol globules may not be able to pass through at ease, and that can give them heart pain and attacks.

A person in perfect health should always have all his blood vessel walls thin and flexible.

Normally, people, along with increasing age, tend to develop the blood vessel wall stiffness, called ARTERIOSCLEROSIS or ATHEROSCLEROSIS, and that gives them the CARDIO-VASCULAR DISEASES (e.g., increased blood pressure, heart attack).

The above-said study suggests that the stiffness is caused by the fat that accumulates because of not getting burnt through physical exercises)

It is here I beg to differ, for the following reasons:

For sure, when people eat too much of food (referring only to carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and oils, but NOT vitamins and minerals), and if they do not burn it off though work, naturally, the unused food (other than the vitamins and minerals) would get stored as adipose tissue within the body, and may stay there as such until it is burnt.

(The minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, etc. do NOT get converted into the adipose tissue).

Working or exercising strenuously can utilise that stored fat.

For that matter, even subsequent starvation – prolonged fasting, can also deplete the fat deposits (but not the minerals).

So, there cannot be any argument about the existence of excessive fat in the sedentary children.

The question arises only when the FAT is said to STIFFEN the arteries.

When a person overeats too much of food than what his body and his physical activity can utilise, naturally the unused food energy is going to be stored as FAT, often as ADIPOSE TISSUE.

If that fat is going to be impregnated to form part of the blood vessels, that fat may not become available for use at a later time, when in need.

In other words, by right, if the person is going to do strenuous exercise or starve without food intake, THIS fat from the blood vessel walls should come for the rescue. Does it happen?

If that is going to happen, then, the stiffness in the blood vessel walls would get reversed. Whereas, such reversals do not seem to occur.

Let evaluate the situation a bit further:

When a person overeats and stays sedentary, all the unutilised carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and oils get converted into fats.

The question is: when the person overeats, does the excess food contain ONLY carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and oil?

How about other constituents of the excessive food, such as the EXCESSIVE MINERALS and vitamins?

It is quiet probable that those EXCESSIVE VITAMINS still get into the cells, or become part of the body fluids, and give rise to TOXICITY-related diseases, such as HYPERVITAMINOSIS (e.g., Hypervitaminosis-A).

Similarly, the excessive IRON mineral content can give rise to Iron Toxicity.

Aluminium to aluminium toxicity, copper to copper toxicity, zinc to zinc toxicity, and so on.

How about the excessive CALCIUM mineral?

Does it cause Calcium TOXICITY?

No one talks about Calcium Toxicity, simply because everybody assumes that Calcium in any large quantity not only does not do any harm, but does only good things to body.

In the first place, the above does not appeal to common sense.

The general rule is, “Anything in excess will be dangerous, or at least, undesirable”. That being the case, on what grounds can we exempt calcium alone? 

Let us recognise some basics:

It is common knowledge that children require about 900 or 1000 mg of Calcium daily for the rapid growth of their entire body (especially the bones, teeth, and nails) – which is double the quantity required by adults.

In all countries, the children are normally fed with food that are very rich in calcium. The milk and all other dairy products, eggs, seafood, etc. contain abundant calcium.

Mother’s milk contains just 20 mg of calcium/ 100m.

Cow’s fresh milk contains 120 mg.

Synthetic milk formulas created at the manufacturing industries tend to contain differing quantities, often numerous times more than that of the mother’s milk. (You will get a shock if you read the labels on the containers of these milk preparations!)

Here, in this study, the sample consisted not of infants, but of children aged between 6 and 8.

When such children are overfed with food (not just milk, as in the case of infants), they will become BIG-SIZED and HEAVY.

Their big SIZE (in terms of bulk) can be directly attributed to the adipose tissues (fat cells) that form cushion-like layers under the skin, and probably around some of the organs in the body.

(The growth in terms of HEIGHT will have to be attributed to the consumption of EXCESSIVE calcium, since that must have promoted the bone growth.)

At the same time, only a SMALL part of the WEIGHT must have come from the stored FAT, whereas, most of the weight must have come from only the Calcium EXCESS.

The normal food, which can be a combination of a wide variety of vegetables and meat, tend to contain ABUNDANT CALCIUM mineral, unlike rest of the minerals (esuch as iron, copper, zinc, and the like.)

Now, where does this calcium go?

Which part(s) of the body stores this Calcium EXCESS?

As has already been pointed out, we know for sure that Calcium will NOT get converted into the FAT.

So, the EXCESSIVE, UN-UTILISABLE CALCIUM will have to get REMOVED from the body, or will have to get stored somewhere within the body.

One way by which the water-soluble free calcium excess can get removed from the body is through urination.

However, a problem would arise when a child does NOT urinate adequately.

When the child under-urinates, most of the calcium, for want of choice of storage location, gets stored in the CELLS themselves (not as part of the fat layer).

At this, if the child happens to get exposed to sunshine, or if the child is given synthetic vitamin-D, then some of the calcium excesses would promote the BONE growth, making the child much taller than those fed with normal diet.

Since the growth in terms of height is genetically controlled, a child, simply because there is unlimited quantities of calcium, cannot keep on growing to unlimited heights of 10 or 20 feet, like the climbing bean plant.

Therefore, the major portion of the calcium excesses enter into the SOFT cells of any flesh / organ, and become part of the cytoplasm of those cells there, and THAT INCREASES THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE BODY, besides increasing the overall SIZE (bulk) of the person.

(When a cell absorbs abundant calcium, it swells up in size. Scientists often mistake this for INFLAMMATION.

Continued absorption of the calcium excess makes THAT cell to split mechanically, resulting in mitotic cell division, which later becomes a LUMP / tumour.)

THUS, WHEN A OVER-EATING CHILD GROWS UP TO BECOME OVER-SIZED AND OVERWEIGHT, only a SMALLER parts of both the above can be due to FAT DEPOSITS, whereas MOST of the above should be due ONLY to the EXCESSIVE CALCIUM that was a major component of the over-eaten food.

Saying that the FAT makes the ARTERY WALLS STIFF does not seem to fit in to all the above explanations, whereas, saying that it is the calcium excess that stiffens the blood vessels appear to make much acceptable explanation.

Calcium can turn into calcium oxalate crystals.

Calcium is often used in industries to harden a variety of substance to be steel-like (see Palaniappan,V.M., 1998, for elaboration on this).

The blood VESSEL WALLS are made up of SOFT cells, and they are bound to receive for storage plenty of the calcium excesses – similar to any other soft cell in the body. THAT STIFFENS the walls, thus making them lose their flexibility.

When the child starves later on, or does strenuous exercises non-stop, these calcified arterial walls will not be ‘expected’ to release the deposits, for the calcium will NOT contribute any bit of energy for work – it will not equal the carbohydrates or any other energy provider!

No one can argue about the DATA obtained in the above study.

It should be true that over-eating and sedentary lifestyle would certainly make any child overweight with STIFF ARTERIES.

It should also be true that if the child continues to overeat AND under-urinate all the time, the arterial wall stiffness can get worse, and remain so in the adulthood of the child, thus giving rise to cardio-vascular diseases.

My above interpretation would mean that, even if the over-eating (calcium-rich diet) child is going to do enormous amount of exercise, as long as the child under-urinates, the arterial walls would certainly get stiffened (losing its elasticity) exactly as that of the sedentary child.

In other words, the amount of physical activity may not influence the stiffening of the arteries, but it is only the retention of calcium within the body that would matter.

(I have brought to recognition in several of my publications the following observation:          

Strenuous activities promote profuse sweating.

Profuse sweating would drastically REDUCE the quantity of URINE voided.

As a result, the calcium excesses that are supposed to get leached out of the body as part of the voided urine (to its saturation point), would only get stagnated inside the body, and that tends to make a child (even adults) morbid obesity.)

The scientists in the University of Eastern Finland have observed that the arteries of THIN children do not get stiffened.

Needless to explain that when a child eats LESS food, the child is NOT going to be OBESE, and also is NOT going to accumulate EXCESSIVE CALCIUM.

Further, as per my study during the past 40 years, I have found that all those, whether they are children or adults, who drink plenty of water (e.g., adults drinking about 2 L or more), and urinate nearly all of it (through about 7 or 8 urinations / day, or more) do NOT accumulate calcium, and as a result, they (a) do not become obese, and (b) do not get arterio / athero-sclerosis, or related cardio-vascular diseases.
